Orange is actually a great shade on most skin tones and eye colors. It highlights blue and green eyes because these colors are complementary and it brings out brown eyes as well because orange is in the red color scheme and reds enhance the depth of brown eyes. This citrus hue will shine on medium and olive skin tones and will brighten up those with fairer skin so long as they don't over do it. Burnt oranges with hints of red or brown work well on darker skin tones and yellow or blue-based shades are easier to pull off if you're fair skinned. If you're leery of trying this fruity new look start out with a sheer wash of color. Palladio's Tinted Lip Balm in Orange is a color that will be a good starting point and costs less than $5!!! Should you decide to amp it up - Makeup Forever's Satin Bright Orange #40 is the perfect burst of fun. Between orange-reds, corals, goldeny oranges, tangerines, pinky-oranges, sherberts, brown-oranges, neon oranges and burnt oranges...you're bound to find something that you'll want to try. This color is much more accessible than you'd think. Just make sure you keep the rest of your makeup simple and light. Concealer and a few coats of mascara is all you'll need with this juicy pout!
The rules for wearing oranges are the same as they are for red or any bright lip for that matter. Make sure your lips aren't dry or chapped beforehand by exfoliating with a warm wash cloth or toothbrush followed by a lip moisturizer. Apply concealer around the outer perimeter of the lips, then blend, to cover any natural redness and apply directly onto the lips to neutralize and prevent your natural lip color from altering the appearance of your chosen lip stick, gloss or liner. Pat a light layer of translucent powder onto your lips to help keep your color in place. Put on your fave OJ inspired orange and then blot with a tissue. To double the staying power, press your ring finger into a similar orange shadow or loose pigment and then dab over the lip color. The beauty of the orange lip is that, compared to a red one, it's a bit more forgiving because it always looks bright and fresh. With reds you run the risk of looking like a gaudy vampire if you don't pick the right shade.
Just to prove to you that this trend really is wearable I tried it out myself. To create the burnt red-orange that I have on, I mixed two lip colors, an orangy-red and a golden-yellow, from one of my lip palettes and then painted it on with a square lip brush. I pressed on a sun-baked orange eye shadow so it would last through baby kisses and dinner. :)
You may be thinking that this post is the result of cabin fever, but trust me, this is one beauty trend you ought to try. It's the perfect way to get out of your makeup rut and it is an accessory in and of itself!
